Root Canals

Just the thought of having a root canal can conjure up all sorts of negative feelings. You may know someone who had a bad experience, or maybe you had one yourself in the past. But the truth is, in the hands of a patient, caring dentist like Dr. Darryl Hatchett, root canals don’t have to be stressful or uncomfortable at all.

Why You Need a Root Canal

To answer this question, you first need to understand a little bit about the anatomy of your tooth.

The outer layer is dental enamel, one of the hardest substances in the human body. Beneath the enamel is a layer called dentin. Dentin isn’t as hard as enamel, but it is comparable to that of bone. The innermost layer of the tooth is dental pulp, which provides blood flow and nutrition to the tooth. The pulp also allows for the nerves to enter the tooth.

When decay or a dental injury damages the pulp, it can penetrate so deeply that it actually touches the nerve and becomes very painful. At this point, the diseased pulp needs to be removed and replaced with a filling material. The only alternative to a root canal would be removal of the tooth.

Your Comfort Comes First

Before we begin your root canal treatment, we’ll make sure your mouth is completely numb. Since you remain numb during your procedure, you probably won’t feel anything except some gentle pressure. Throughout your appointment, we'll keep checking in with you to make sure you're completely comfortable.

If you experience discomfort after the procedure, it can be helpful to remember that this is caused by the infection that made the root canal necessary, not by the root canal treatment itself. The discomfort will fade soon, once your immune system recognizes that the infection is gone. If necessary, Dr. Hatchett will prescribe medication to stop the infection and relieve any lingering discomfort.

The key to having a stress-free root canal is a skilled and gentle team who listens to your needs and responds to your concerns. We’ll talk you through the procedure so you know what we’re doing and what to expect. In over 15 years of practicing dentistry, Dr. Hatchett has performed hundreds of safe, comfortable, and effective root canals.
